F-14A Tomcat

Academy's 1/72 scale F-14A Tomcat is available online from Squadron.com

Description

Here is Academy's 1/48 scale kit of the F-14A Tomcat.

The Academy kit is not as well detailed as Hasegawa offering. I decided to build it with the canopy closed.

I had Verlinden detail set and wanted to use the gun from it. Lots of modifications were needed to fit the gun bay inside the Academy fuselage. I also used exhaust nozzles from my Hasegawa kit but plenty of trimming was needed. Otherwise, the kit was build with only minor modifications.

Painting was done with Humbrol enamels. Decals were from SuperScale.

I think there was a production problem, because all the red parts of decals broke into many pieces. After the decals were applied as best as possible (like working on a jigsaw puzzle, but some fragments were missing), I had to mask parts of vertical fins and spray red to complete the correct pattern.

Furthermore, the shark mouth was incorrect in shape, so I cut the decals to correct shape and added a thin red line with fine brush.

Humbrol gloss cote was sprayed over the completed paint and markings; and the uneveness of the decal edges were sanded and polished.
