F-14A-15-GR BuAerNo.160322, 3-6024
Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force
81st Tactical Fighter Squadron/81st Tactical Fighter Wing
Khatami AB, 1980
This “Tomcat” became known as the “Foxbat Scare”
already early in its career. It was one of two Iranian
“Tomcats” that intercepted a Soviet MiG-25RBS high over the
Caspian Sea, in October 1978, and tracked it for two minutes
will full system lock-on, while the Soviet pilot was giving
his best to escape. Following this interception, no Soviet
reconnaissance aircraft entered the Iranian airspace for ten
years. 3-6024 went on to see extensive service with the 81st
TFS during the war with Iraq, and was credited with
destruction of several Iraqi fighters, including at least
one Mirage F.1EQ. It currently remains in service with 81st
TFW, following recent major overhaul at Iranian Aircraft
Industries.
