F-14A-100-GR BuAerNo. 160666 “Old Nick 200”
Fighter Squadron HUNDRED ELEVEN - VF-111 “Sundowners”
USS Kitty Hawk (CVN-63), 1980
This “Tomcat” was delivered to VF-111 on 16 June 1978.
On 26 March 1987 it was flown for the historic “one
millionth flight hour” of F-14As. It was transferred to
VF-21 in 1989 and later to PMTC, in December 1991, where it
served until the late 1990s. VF-111 began F-14A-operations
in 1978, and did two WestPac cruises aboard USS Kitty Hawk.
The first, from May 1979 until February 1980, brought the
ship and the squadron to the Arabian Sea off Iran, during
the hostage crisis, and following the Soviet invasion of
Afghanistan. The second cruise, between April and November
1981, saw the ship operating in the same area again.
