Here is my rendition of the Tamiya 1/48 scale N1K1
George.
The model was built several years ago straight from
the box.
This was one of my first attempts at creating the
"chipped" paint effect. There has been much discussion on the internet
about the accuracy of chipped paint finishes on Japanese naval aircraft.
Though this particular aircraft may or may not have had a chipped
finish, at least some Georges appear to have been sent to the field
without a proper undercoat.
Regardless of the accuracy, it was a fun project at
the time and was instructive on the use of Metalizer as a metal
undercoat. I used masking tape to pull paint up, and in places I used a
Q tip to rub through the paint.
The final wash was done with Grumbacher artist oils
thinned with Turpenoid.
