Here is my Tamiya 1/48 scale P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback in the
markings of “Raid Hot Mama” flown by Lt. John Drummond, 405 FG. This
is the first Tamiya Jug I have built and I will jump on the
bandwagon and add to the chorus of praise for this kit. It is so
well engineered that it fell together with very little effort on my
part.
The only aftermarket items I added were the wheels and the seat,
both from True Details. I also added antenna wire made from E-Z
line. The decals are from Eagle Strike #48053 “American Jabos Part
3”, although some of the kit decals were used for the stencils.
I painted the lower surfaces with Tamiya XF-53 Neutral Gray and the
upper surfaces with Gunze-Sangyo H52 Olive Drab. All the aluminum
bits were painted with Alclad II over a coat of Mr. Surfacer 1000 as
a primer. The panel lines were washed with artist oil paint thinned
with lighter fuel, Payne’s Gray on the lower and Raw Umber on the
upper.
I enjoyed this build, finding it to be a pleasant break from more
challenging kits!
