North American P-51D Mustang

Tamiya's 1/48 scale P-51D Mustang is available online from Squadron

Description

Here is a photo of my Tamiya P-51D Mustang in 1/48 scale built straight from the box.

The only additions have been an aerial wire and plumbing for the drop tanks from stretched sprue. The trickiest part was drilling the clear canopy for the aeriel.

The model was painted using Humbrol Metalcote Aluminium.

Photography

This image was taken all in camera. I used a 5x4 studio camera.

The sky is a back projection through perspex and the propeller movement was achieved using a hair dryer. Because of this method there is a difference in the power of the light source ie the lights for the plane is brighter than for the background I had to light them seperately and do a multiple exposure to balance them out. This meant shooting the plane with the lights on and a black cloth over the background then I had to turn the lights off uncover the backdrop and expose the sky on the same piece of film.
