This version of the WRX is the car that Richard Burns took 3rd
place in the 2001 Rally of Great Britain. The 3rd place finished
gave him enough point to win the drivers championship. The rally was
held in wet conditions and after seeing some photos of this car
completely covered in mud, I just had to recreate it.
The kit is Tamiya’s, (24250) and is built straight from the box.
After the car was painted and decaled up, it was time to make it
dirty. When I build my models, I like to have them looking as
realistic as is possible. While it is great to show a rally car
perfectly clean, I believe in them being shown in the condition that
most of us see them in. That is, in action, whether it is covered in
dust, snow, mud, etc. Some of you my disagree, indeed, a person from
my own model club was overheard to say that I only do these finishes
to hide my mistakes. I guess only you can judge.
Anyway, my favourite mix of glue, putty and paints were mixed and
applied using an old paint brush. Some static grass was added to
break up the mud and to give some texture to the mix. As it was
raining during the rally, some gloss clear was added to the sides
and bottom of the car.
Hope you’ve enjoyed it.
