Here is Chris Wauchop's 1/72
scale Horch 108 Type 40. The distinguishing feature of this variant is
that the spare tyres are carried inside the car body.
Chris reports that this
model was a pain to build, but the results are quite satisfying. The first
problem is that the instructions are imprecise, with arrows pointing at
general positions on the drawings, but positive location marks are not
present. Also, many of the parts required significant clean-up prior to assembly.
It was also a challenge to
get all four wheels on the ground at the same time.
The kit did not come with a
clear part for the windscreen, so Chris cut a section of acetate for that
job. He sprayed around an arc-shaped mask on each side of the windscreen
to represent dirty glass surrounding the wiper pattern.
Chris's Horch was painted
overall Tamiya German Grey using the Testor Aztek airbrush. Pastel chalk
was applied to depict dust, and additional shading was achieved by
spraying a thinned mix of Flat Black and Red Brown followed by a selective
oil wash.
The model was sealed with a
coat of Gunze Flat Clear, which toned down the weathering in general and
the chalk in particular. More pastel chalk was added after the flat coat
to compensate.
