Hawker Hurricane Mk.IIc |
Hobbycraft's 1/48 scale Hurricane Mk.IIc is available online
from Squadron.com
Here is my Hobbycraft 1/48 Hurricane IIc with
FlightDecs decals.
The kit was built primarily “straight from the box”
with the addition of a few bits of etched to enhance the tiny features
such as the belts, stirrup and gun sites.
The most interesting part is the decals.
The decals come from a small company in Thunder Bay Ontario, Canada
called “FlightDecs”. This is the second product released for wide
distribution and is a decal sheet of three Canadian Hurricane pilots
during WW2. I chose to represent the plane flown by Pilot Officer Houle
of 213 Squadron in the spring of 1942 operating out of Edku, Egypt in
the defense of the harbor at Alexandria. Unique to this squadron is that
they painted their “hornet” motif on the roundel!
The
kit was painted with Model Master paints and placed on a desert base
made of bits found in the (desperately dry and overgrown) garden. Colors
were FS 30266, Midstone, FS 30118, RAF Dark Earth and FS 35231 RAF Azure
Blue. All colors and weathering were applied with my trusty Paasche
single action airbrush and over-coated with Model Master Flat.
The decal quality is top notch! No silvering, no bubbles or break up,
great color density and thin! They snuggled down with just a touch of
Microset and disappeared after the dull coat. Easily as good a quality
as Aeromaster or Yellowhammer decals.
As a postscript, this kit one the IPMS Ottawa, Canada “Best Canadian
subject” and “best of show”. (blush)
