Soviet Submarine Oriol

Soviet Submarine "Oriol"

Zvezda's 1/350 scale Oriol Submarine is available online from Squadron.com

Description

I have never attempted any naval subjects before, so this another first for me.

This is Zvezda's 1/350 scale "Oriol" Nuclear submarine. The kit was reviewed recently on HyperScale with images of the parts.

I really enjoyed building this model. It was quite simple, with relatively few parts and no assembly dramas. The kit is big too. Even at 1/350 scale, the finished model is around 18" (45cm) long.

I did not have any colour reference so I went off the box top, trying to reproduce the colours and lighting effects on the submerged vessel.

The upper half was first sprayed NATO Black from the Tamiya Acrylic Paint range, and then misted over structural features with Flat Black by Gunze.

The lower half was sprayed with Gunze RLM 02 Grey with Gunze Off-White on the nose area.

Once dry, details were lightly drybrushed with Testor's Camouflage Grey.

The end result is not a bad looking kit of an interesting subject.

I enjoyed building this kit and can recommend it to other modellers.

Thanks to Squadron for the review sample.
